Auguste Lambermont (1819 – 1905) était diplomate et proche de Leopold II dans ses projets coloniaux. Il permit également de libérer la navigation sur l'Escaut en 1863, que les Pays-Bas contrôlait depuis 1830. C'est en 1903 que le tronçon situé sur Schaerbeek se voit attribuer ce nom. En 1923, il est étendu au tronçon situé sur la Ville de Bruxelles. (remark in French, as published)
