Cette place fut construite sur les ruines de l'ancien Palais du Coudenberg qui abritait les représentants de la couronne espagnole et autrichienne à Bruxelles. Suite à un incendie en 1731, les gouverneurs s'installeront un peu plus bas aux abords de l'actuel parc du Mont des Arts. Les ruines du Coudenberg resteront ainsi durant 40 ans, avant que Charles de Lorraine en 1771 n'ordonne aménagement d'une place de style classique a cet emplacement. C'est la Place Royale.
