La place rend hommage à Saint Géry, évêque de Cambrai né au milieu du VIe siècle qui lutta contre le paganisme, allant jusqu'à détruire des idoles. Il rétablit également le siège de Cambrai dont Bruxelles continua à dépendre jusqu'en 1559. Il est également à l'origine de la construction de nombreuses églises/bâtisses religieuses dont, la plus connue, une chapelle qui deviendra plus tard la Cathédrale Saints-Michel-et-Gudule.
