Désiré de Haerne (1804-1890) était abbé à Roulers. Il était également engagé politiquement et finit par être membre du Congrès national de 1830. Il continuera par après à se démarquer dans ses combats au sein de l'enseignement, de la pauvreté industrielle, du développement infrastructurel, et du développement notamment en Inde où il est engagé pour la cause des sourds-muets.
