'La rue trouve son origine dans un ancien chemin sinueux, dénommé rue des Crapauds. Cette artère fut rebaptisée rue Gustave Demanet vers 1912. Notons que cette dénomination, qui rend hommage à un homme s’étant distingué par des actes de libéralité, avait d’abord été attribuée, en 1891, au sentier dit Kauwenbergstraat, situé sur le plateau du Heysel.'
