Mathieu Pauwels (?-1914) était menuisier. Il combattit durant la Guerre, alors que les troupes belges étaient retranchées à Anvers en attendant l'intervention des Britanniques. Pour empêcher la progression des Allemands, ils effectuaient des sorties afin de les ralentir. Lors d'une d'entre elles, les Allemands avaient préparés une embuscade.
