Michel Van Nieuwenborgh (1879-1915) fut soldat durant la guerre. Assez rapidement, les troupes belges repliées près de l'Yser manquent de munitions. Des ateliers pour en créer sont mis en place, et Michel Van Nieuwenborgh travaillait dans l'un d'entre eux lorsque une violente explosion eut lieu, tuant sur le coup une centaine de soldats, sans que l'on ne sache la cause de cette explosion.
