'Conçue comme une prolongation de la rue du Télégraphe (aujourd’hui disparue), dont elle porte à l’origine le nom, l’artère reçoit au début des années 1850 sa dénomination définitive, diversement orthographiée au cours du temps: Nicolaÿ, Nicolaï ou encore Nicolai. Ce nom renvoie soit à Joseph Nicolay (1798-1842), avocat qui fut membre actif du premier gouvernement belge, soit à Fernand Nicolay (1772-1854), bienfaiteur originaire de Stavelot, dont une statue conçue par Charles-Auguste Fraikin se trouve au cimetière de Laeken.'
