La rue doit son nom à Jules-Joseph d'Anethan, homme politique belge du XIXe siècle. Après des études de droit, il entama une carrière d'avocat général à la Cour d'appel de Bruxelles, jusqu'en 1843, et dans la magistrature. Il s'engagea alors dans la vie politique belge (1844) et occupa les postes de député catholique au Parlement, de représentant au Sénat avant de devenir Ministre des Affaires Etrangères (1870-1871), bourgmestre de Linkebeek... Il est également connu pour avoir défendu l'idée de former un parti catholique indépendant du clergé. (remark in French, as published)
